The National Forest is transforming a former post-industrial landscape across 200 square miles of the Midlands, reconnecting the ancient woodland areas of Charnwood and Needwood. Since the early 1990s, this ambitious project has turned land once scarred by coal mining and heavy industry from black to green, creating a living, breathing forest where people can live, work and thrive alongside nature.
What makes the National Forest truly unique is its scale and vision. It is the first forest created at scale in England for over 900 years, and rather than being wall-to-wall trees, it is a richly wooded landscape that supports communities, businesses and wildlife together.

More than 9.5 million trees planted
Forest cover increased from 6% to 25% — more than twice the national average
